I went through a lot of gyrations to try to get my modem working to no
avail.  It seems it turned into a winmodem. 8)  Windows is the only
thing that can talk to it.  I disabled all other devices and booted dos
and still can't talk to it.  

I've got a new 56k external modem on order.  I give upl.
