[ale] My boot sector looks dead.

No matter how many times I re-install LILO I still get LI at boot time, and
nothing else.  I'm pretty sure the boot sector is trashed, but what's a
fool-proof method that will let me know?  Can I dd info to the bootsector
and then try to read it back, or will that cause Great Harm?
