[ale] CD distribution with Live FS?

Howdy list members.

Does anyone have any experience with a current Linux distribution that has
a working live file system on the CD image that can run Linux (with the
appropriate RAM disks) without needing an installation?

At one time, a (Fall 1994) Yggdrasil release would work complete with X
though I don't recall if it enabled any networking.  It didn't break any
speed records but it did allow folks to try things out before installing.
