[ale] mounting NT partition

I'm trying to mount an NT partition (hpfs format) under redhat 6.0.
It is running the original 2.2.5 kernel.  When I try to mount it with 
        mount -t hpfs /dev/hda7 /mnt/mnt
it fails with a generic filesystem busy or bad superblock message, and
/var/log/messages says: 
        Aug 30 09:46:23 carrot kernel: HPFS: hpfs_read_super: Not HPFS 

If I try to mount it with linuxconf, I get more message, but the sasme
failure (though linuxconf says the mount succeeds):
        09:52:22 carrot modprobe: can't locate module block-major-8

        Aug 30 09:52:23 carrot modprobe: can't locate module block-major-48

lsmod shows that the hpfs module is loaded.  I don't know what those
other modules are for.

Surely, one of y'all have solved this problem and can tell me what
stupid thing I'm forgetting.
