[ale] nmbd (samba) won't start properly <- why ?

Greetings again !

Just installed Samba2.0.3 on RedHat5.2  and am trying to startup nmbd by
inetd in inetd.conf by............

    netbios-ns dgram udp wait root /usr/local/samba/in/nmbd nmbd

which is verbatim the install instructions.

However, when inetd runs at startup, inetd and smbd behave properly, but
nmbd goes into a "race" condition and repeatedly installs in a loop,
according to log.nmb.

What is causing this and how is it rectified ?
