[ale] Odd Boot Message

I've upgraded my kernel this AM from 2.2.0pre7 to 2.2.6. All appears to
be working fine except for a message during boot, "modprobe: can't
locate module char-major-4". Running cat /proc/devices indicates this is
/dev/ttyS. My modem is on ttyS0 however and working fine. Make modules
and modules_install and depmod -a haven't changed a thing. It seems that
the system is trying to install a module for a driver built into the
kernel that's already running. Any ideas what's generating this message?

TIA
