[ale] StarOffice problems

I downloaded: 
staroffice-common
staroffice-english
staroffice-static

and I put these in /tmp.
I then downloaded the debian package to install all these.
It worked.  

Now, no matter what staroffice application I start, and installation
screen comes up, tells me I can install extra modules or delete them, or
repair an installation.  No matter what I do, I cannot get a program to
ever actually come up.  What am I doing wrong here?  This thing is
really ambiguous..
