Did you download the windows extra programs (vmware-tools.exe) for
vmware? Copy them into your virtual windows session and run it. It will
install an improved display device that gives me 256 colors. Since that's
as high as my X goes right now I can't tell you if it does better or not.
Also, it transmits the windows display much faster (probably pixelizes
kinda like mpeg) as well. I'm running NT4 in mine so YMMV.
