	Here is my suggestion (somebody chime in if I miss something).

	$minicom
	atdt ISP Number
	login to ISP until you get the PPP stuff on their end.
	Alt - q (or Control-Z q)
	Quit without reset? Yes
	$su
	#/usr/sbin/pppd -detach crtscts defaultroute /dev/ttyS1 38400 &
 
	Do your thing. When you are ready to hangup,
	#killall -HUP pppd
