I talked to Dennis Ritchie at one of the recent USENIX conferences,
either Calif. in January or the Security Conf. in San Antonio later this
year, can't recall which.  Anyway, he says that Inferno is kind of an
extension of Plan 9.  Plan 9, is what UNIX would have been if they had
known in the early 70's what they know now.  I've got a cdrom of it
sitting in a stack somewhere, but you should be able to download it. 
Dennis said he has Inferno running on a desktop at work, so it must be
pretty extensive.
