Well, im not sure what you mean by "fallback", but recompiling kernels is
fool-proof.
1) compile your new kernel.
2) your old one should be '/vmlinuz' (or '/boot/vmlinuz' if you use
RedHat), just copy that to '/vmlinuz-old', and move your new kernel to
whatever your old one used to be.
3) edit your /etc/lilo.conf file. Make sure you *ADD* a new section to
the bottom that allows you to type 'old' or something at the prompt so it
will boot the OLD kernel just in case the new one dosent work. (just copy
the syntax of the above linux entry, change the image file, and the label)
4) MAKE SURE to type 'lilo' at the prompt as root so lilo will be updated
with the changes you just made.
This has saved me a few times from complete reinstallations. But, more
than likely, your kernel should work fine.
