[ale] how do I apply a patch?

Very elementary question:

I downloaded ddd (ver 2.3) and in order to force it to use lesstif instead of
Motif, I'm supposed to apply the patch: lesstif-0.82.patch.

I downloaded the ddd sources, compiled and installed it without the patch and it
does come up.  I just wanted to see how far I could go.

Do I need to recompile with some switches and then apply the patch, or do I just
"apply the patch" to the newly compiled executable?  (Lesstif 0.82 is compiled
and sitting in /usr/local/lib and an entry for that path is in /etc/ld.so.conf.)
