[ale] e2fsck'ing the root partition

Somebody once showed me how to e2fsck the partition you booted off of safely
without having to reboot off of a boot disk.  You have to revert to
single-user mode, and remount the drive read-only...  so that's 'init 3',
and then what?  (Hat?  You on?)
