[ale] tar, drops core

I archived some goodies to floppy a good while back with tar.  I then
upgraded to ELF executables.  I then attempted to untar the goodies off
the floppy and tar dropped core.

I recovered the old tar and it worked fine.  This makes me feel a bit
uneasy as I've got other stuff in this format.  Anyone have any
insights?

NT is secure.... as long as you don't remove the shrink wrap.
