Now, however, the true depths of my idiocy can be appreciated. After
rebuilding my kernel with ATAPI CD support *multiple times* and
undergoing a good half-day of extreme frustration, I realized that I
had not remembered to copy my new kernel to a place where LILO could
see it!

Everything works now. Sorry for the distraction :-/
