[ale] MTU on a ISDN/forwarder to improve performanc?

I'm using a forwarding machine with an external ISDN Bitsufrer Pro
connected.  Since I implemented using the IP-Forwarding, My transfer
rate dropped from an average of about 11.1K/s to 5.3K/s.  I'm sure
I'm using both channels.  Does anyone nkow if changing the MTU would
help increast the speed?  I believe right now I'm using the default
which is 1500...
