[ale] ethernet problem

Hi,

I can't seem to get networking going on a machine I'm working with.
When it boots, it properly recognizes the 3Com 3c905 PCI card, but
the device is not activated.  If I try a "ifconfig eth0 up" it
says:

loading device 'eth0'...
eth0: 3Com 3c905 [snip]
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Try again 

Any suggestions?  Oh, this is a RedHat 4.2 machine.
