[ale] mgetty dial-in / dial-out problems

I have mgetty set up to answer the line on /dev/ttyS0, which works 
fine.  The problem is that when mgetty is listening ( set to respawn 
in inittab ), I cannot dial-out.  My chat script is also using 
/dev/ttyS0 ( as recommended in the docs ), but the script fails with 
chat outputing ERROR^M in the logs.

Does anyone have a working implementation of a dial-in/dial-out 
situation using mgetty?

Any help would be appreciated.
