[ale] PPP problems

HELP!
I HAD a working ppp install on my modem, and switched to ISDN on a 
3com ImpactIQ.  
I got ppp working with diald on this, but now it just quit working.
No explanation.  I'm using PAP authentication.  I can use minicom and dial
the modem and quit and start pppd and it works, but any ppp connect script
fails with "Serial line is looped back"

I've tried EVERYTHING in the howto etc.  I've done dejanews searches but
no luck.

I'm running 2.0.18 (Redhat 4.0) 

Any help would be appreciated
