[ale] kde problem

Has anyone seen this?  Everytime I try to start up any part of the KDE
suite, I get 
 Fatal IO error: client killed
This is on a debian system, with Kde Beta, and Qt 1.3.
Of course, the FAQ has no mention of this, and the mailing list archive on
www.kde.org is unsearchable (344 pages w/ 10 or so articles a page).  Come
to think of it...I can't remember the last problem I found a solution to
in a FAQ.

Anyway, anyone know what causes this?
