As regards my previous spiel about my PPP/popclient/general network
not-work trouble:

I've experimented with the MTU/MRU options to pppd, and discovered
that if I back the MTU and MRU off to 512 bytes, things seem to work
a lot better. I still don't know what changed to make this necessary,
or whether this is the "right" fix, so any further input will be
appreciated.
