[ale] GNU Zip lib

I'm trying to install a Paradise Netrek server and the makefile
is looking for the GNU Zip library in /usr/local/bin.  I downloaded
the source for gzip and went through the installation but it didn't
install a library and doesn't appear to have any makefile switches
to do it.  Does anyone know where I can get the GNU zip library or
what I'm doing wrong?
