Yeah...it's because of the mode that the password prompt puts it into.

Try this
ftp -n site <input >/dev/null

Where input is:
user anonymous email@
cd blah blah
get blah
type i
get blah
quit

The -n tells it not to use .netrc, which has the side effect of 
starting ftp at the 
ftp>
prompt instead of the userid/password prompt.
