[ale] PPP

I have a Linux system with kernel 1.3.85 and I'm trying to use PPP.  when I run PPP with 
the follogin command 'pppd passive'  I get the following error:

Sorry - PPP not available on this system.  I have compiled PPP support into the kernel.
Does ne1 know what might be wrong?
