[ale] (ale) USR modems with Linux

Does anyone know the best initialization string for USR Sportster 28.8 Externals?

My friend is starting an ISP and is getting in 32 Sportsters but has not been able 
to get the modems to pick up every time (it's a reliable every OTHER time they pick 
up).  He's using uugetty (newest out as of Friday) and pppd.  His multiple serial 
connection he is using is Cyclades Cyclom-Y.  Any ideas other than a got INIT 
string?
