Having recently seen that error....
What it indicated to me was that I had picked the wrong scsi driver
to compile into the kernel. As for the set up programs, some scsi cards
have a code on boot like CTRL-A, check the card docs (or watch the
screen).
And make sure the SCSI card sees the drive! Watch that boot message!
