[ale] PPPD 2.2.0e not compiling

I should bounce this to the ppp.etc newsgroups, but I figured I'd try here
first since the Atlanta community seems to have so many PPP users.  I'm
trying to compile pppd 2.2.0e, and it's crashing out with a number of
errors of the type "data definition has no type or storage class."  I
checked out the header files it was complaining about, and there seems to
be a data type u_int32_t that doesn't exist on my system... or for that
matter may well not exist at all.  I've never seen any type like that
before, but I'm only a novice programmer, so I may be missing something.

the first offending line in the pppd.h file is:

extern u_int32_t netmask; /* IP netmask to set on interface */

and it's surrounded by a bunch of extern int's.  I could go through and
change them all... but i'm sure something would break if I did that.  Help?
