They say the best bench marks are timing things you actually
do with your computer and as such I would say in this group
at least that timing a compile of a Linux kernel would be a
good measure of system speed. If you like I have a simple
script that lets you do exactly that by echoing the date command
to a file in between each of the steps for a kernel compile.
BTW, on my system as I told you at the meeting the actual compile
time for a 1.2.10 kernel (the make zImage step) is just over 10
min. so you should be able to better this by a min or two assuming
you have at least 16Mb of memory also.
