[ale] ghostscript, tex, dvips

This isn't exactly a linux question, but maybe someone has the
answer...

Has anyone been able to get ghostscript to process files
generated by tex | dvips? When I try to do this (i.e. for
the GNU make docs), gs emits many mysterious errors like

Error: /syntax error in -filetype-
Operand stack: ... (more uninformative [to me] stuff)...

This is with the Slackware 3.0 gs & ntex, under 1.2.13. GS
and dvips docs shed little light on this matter.

Any clues? Or a pointer to an (rt)fm?

Thanks,

joe
