[ale] /etc/aliases.dir woes -- continued

Ok, I just tried to run newaliases, and it died with:

WARNING: cannot open alias database /etc/aliases
Cannot create database for alias file /etc/aliases: No such device

But /etc/aliases is still there.  

Any clues?  I'm off to read Docs/Changes again.....
