[ale] Mail not working

I realize that this is more a unix question than a linux question.
I am geting the following error when I try to send mail in emacs.

   Error while setting up child: Bad file number

The mail was working until I filled up the disk one day.  I can 
still send mail from the command line using "mail".  However,
this is a bit of a pain.  I have no problems reading mail inside
emacs.

Any suggestions?
