For mail, popcleint will download all the mail to a local file,
mkae that file you local mailbox and point pine to that.

Popcleint is available for most systems.

For mail you can use something like suck to grab which
news articles you want onto the local system, its like running
your own feed.

Both of these can be cron'ed to ru late at night, or hourly.
