[ale] broken kernel question

OK, the kernel build was *MUCH* faster this time (<2hrs), but upon boot
(from a floppy - I used make zdisk) Linux output
AX:0212
BX:0C00
CX:0B01
DX:0000
1007
in a seemingly infinite loop... Weird. Any ideas what went wrong? I've
had lots of trouble with this machine (things like being unable to
successfully untar a kernel source tar file) - any chance that there's
something strange about it that's causing a problem (instead of my
ineptitude!)? It's got lots of stuff built onto the motherboard - bus
fmouse, video, IDE drive controller, etc. Could any of this make Linux
choke?
