PPP (fwd)

I have a working 2.0 kernel, but whenever I try to dial up my provider, I 
get this message:

"Sorry, this system lacks PPP kernel support."

This is not the obvious problem. PPP is compiled in, support is checked 
"yes" in the .config file and PPP is recognized at boot time with all the 
right messages. Given all of that, what could trigger the message above? 
This is driving me nuts.
