This may not be appropriate bor this group but here goes.
I want to try different fonts in latex. I find files in 
/usr/lib/texmf/fonts/cm/sauter/tfm which I can use by using
the \newfont command in latex. But the names are cryptic. Is
there an easier or quicker way to view the fonts?

Can I create fonts from other directories?

Thanks for any help including what fm if I should rtfm.
