^Does anyone know how to configure pppd to automatically negotiate
^an mtu of 2096 versus the default 1500.  I've tried setting "mtu 2096"
^on the pppd command line but to no avail.  AAARRRGGGHHH!!!

Keep in minf that MTU has to equal the MRU on the other side.  If you
can;t control it (say its an ISP), thn you must play some tricks.

Look into the doc on ppd further for a better understanding on how it
negotiates this stuff.
