Thanks for your response and pointers. Two things were causing my
problem.

1. sendmail was not running as a daemon.

2. I had been using this same machine to connect to my local ISP via
slip and had a nameserver listed in /etc/resolv.conf.  Sendmail was
apparently trying to connect to a name server that wasn't there. As
best I can tell all problems are gone. Some of them anyway. I still
have to pay my bills.
