observations (discussion, not humor.. sorry)
so, i've joined the geeks mailing list and have been reading it the
past week or so, and i have been asking myself a few questions:
1.Why do most of the posts include *all* of the original message text.
As geeks, you should know that this contributes to the noise portion
of the signal/noise ratio of the list. This list is far too noisy
for it's own good.
2.Why am i seeing the same jokes that were out 10-15 years ago just comming
out now? (ok, so the *updates* to how newer OSs are like
beer/airplains/ sexy undergarmets/cars/gender (men/women for those
of you who may not know) etc... are ok... but you act like these
are new and innovative. perhaps i'm just an old fart. (and at 25,
that's scary)
3.Why the heck can't you blasted people read the unsubscribe information
provided at the onset of your subscription?!?
perhaps a few possible solutions:
1: just edit your replies people....geesh.. it's not that difficult.
2: Perhaps there is a www site/ FAQ or a FSJ (Frequently Submitted Joke) list
for this list. If there isn't, volunteers to make one?
3: Upon request for subscription, make the user go through an entire
unsubscribe/resubscribe process before makeing them actually
allowed on the list. More Specifically:
user "subscribes" to geek-humor (first time)
list server recognises new user and unsubscribes them from geek-humor
and subscribes them to geek-test. Then sends them a message that
makes them run through a few things before they can subscribe.
User has to reply including the body of the message but only lines with the
letter 'y' included as quoted text to an address that is different
than the automatic one included.
After they do that, the list server will send a message telling them
to unsubscribe from geeks-test and resubscribe to geeks-humor. This
time the server recognises the user is on an allowed list (by checking
that they have done the geeks-test thing) and allow them on.

You know what acronyms are even though they havn't been used
before (or rather you haven't seen them)
you feel guilty about posting something to a list who's purpose is
states that the list is for one thing, and your post is another
