Considering the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) ability to
produce the seemingly CMM-du-jour, I could not help a little
tongue-in-cheek humor.  Actually, there may be enough of a grain of
truth here that this in fact is not funny.  :-)


		The CMM-CMM:
	A Capability Maturity Model for 
         Capability Maturtity Models.

The CMM-CMM presents a framework for evaluating the maturity of
Capability Maturity Models.  The CMM-CMM differentiates CMMs into the
following five maturity levels:

Level 1: PROPOSED
The Proposed CMM level accounts for nearly 85% of all CMMs ever
invented.  These CMMs are characterized by chaotic change, with
constant improvements preventing the document from getting released.
In extreme cases, changes actually create a document that is further
from release than the original.

Level 2: MANDATED
CMMs attaining level 2 can easily be identified by having their use
(and abuse) Mandated by some authority of sufficient influence.
Usually, the decision to mandate use is made without regard for the
underlying technical worth of the CMM.

Level 3: SELF-SUSTAINED
A CMM of this level, when published, creates sufficient volumes of
change requests from the user community to justify the next version. In
this manner, a project dedicated to the production of a CMM can sustain
itself for long periods of time without actually developing any new
information.

Level 4: NARCISTIC
A Narcistic CMM can be identified by the rampant belief that adherence
to the CMM, and achieving its levels, is in itself an end rather than a
means.

Level 5: PROLIFIC
The ulitmate maturity level of a CMM is attained in the Prolific
level.  In this level, a single CMM can cause the creation of other
(minimally related) CMMs.  A specical subset of these can be found when
CMMs are created to measure your ability to achieve levels in another
CMM.  (See Narcistic above).
