You're not an idiot, but you are missing something...
in normal everyday life, humans count from 1-10. Math geeks call counting
like that "BASE 10" or, decimal. (Abbreviated DEC)
For some reason, it is benifical to count in different ways, like Binary
(Base 2) and you'd count 0,1,10,11, etc...
that brings us to counting in base 8. like 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 etcetc...
That's abbreviated (OCT)
now if you do the conversion, the value for 25 in Base10 (DEC) equals 31
when you count by 8's (OCT)
therefore DEC (decimal)25 = OCT(octal) 31
and forgive me if i butchered.
